IPOSC DATABASE OF TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
This database of training opportunities in Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology is offered as a service to ophthalmic trainees and to Institutions that offer ophthalmic training. All entries appear with the consent of the person in charge of the training program, who has either entered the data or has been asked to check that the entry is correct. IPOSC has not inspected these training programs and it is the responsibility of trainees to check that any program is appropriate for them.
The training opportunities have been divided into fellowships and observerships. We have defined a fellowship as a post in which the trainee has direct clinical responsibility for patient care, both as outpatients and for surgery under supervision. This will generally require that the trainee hold appropriate medical registration and indemnity cover in the host country and be fluent enough in the language of the host country to be able to communicate effectively with patients. It may or may not be paid. Fellowships are commonly for 6 months or a year.
An observer has no clinical responsibility for patient care. They can only observe outpatient consultations and cannot be directly involved in surgical care. No registration or indemnity cover is required. Observerships are generally shorter, from a week to 3 months.
The database is organized so that it can be searched by country of training and title of program. Contact details are given for the person responsible for the training program and any inquiries should be directed to them.

The Section of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus caters to the eye health needs of patients aged 0 to 18 years old. With its retinue of consultant staff with well-rounded subspecialty training from notable institutions here and abroad, the Section provides quality, up-to-date, and efficient primary pediatric eye health care that includes diagnosis and management of congenital and infantile cataracts, errors of refraction, amblyopia, retinopathy of prematurity, ophthalmia neonatorum, allergic and infectious conjunctivitides, congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, congenital and infantile glaucoma, associated ocular anomalies in craniofacial and dysmorphic syndromes as well as other systemic disorders with ocular manifestations. The Section closely works together with other Subspecialty Sections of the DOH Eye Center in co-managing other ocular disorders that require highly specialized and multi-specialty eye care. The Section is also actively involved with the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders of ocular alignment in both pediatric and adult patients. Following the World Health Organization's directive on the Childhood Blindness Prevention Program, a formal Fellowship Training Program in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus was developed and implemented in January 2008 that was geared towards the training of competent, well-rounded, compassionate, and ethical pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus specialists who will practice in underserved areas of the Philippines. It is the aim of the Section to provide fast and efficient albeit, high-quality standard of care to the DOH Eye Center's pediatric and strabismus patients.
